Basic DIY Generator Maintenance You Need to Know

Just like your car and all other machines need regular maintenance, so does your standby generator for home or business use. Without regular maintenance, your generator may not only not work as expected, but may also experience more wear and tear, earlier deterioration, and truncated longevity as a result.

Most standby generator maintenance is fairly basic and straightforward. However, if you’re unfamiliar with generators and aren’t comfortable performing maintenance yourself, our team can help. Call us today to schedule any maintenance or repair work necessary.

Oil Change

Checking your oil level is one of the most basic, yet most important, generator maintenance must-dos. Just as you wouldn’t drive your car without regular oil changes, you shouldn’t run your generator without making sure your fluids are topped off. If your oil levels are low, top them off during your monthly check. However, don’t forget to empty the old oil and replace it with new oil every once in a while, too, to ensure your system has what it needs to run smoothly.

Air FIlter

One of the easiest maintenance tasks for a standby generator is that of changing the air filter. Your air filter should be replaced about once every six months, or after the generator sets work for 300 hours. You can’t change an air filter too frequently – if you notice that the air filter looks dirty before either of the mile markers above has been reached, go ahead and change it.

Physical Inspection

About once per month, you should perform a physical inspection of your generator. This means looking at your standby generator and checking to make sure:

  • There’s not too much dirt or debris on or in the generator – if so, remove it;
  • All of the fuel lines are secure;
  • The battery cables are secure and the battery doesn’t show any visible signs of corrosion;
  • The coolant levels are topped off;
  • The generator is free from rust; and
  • There are no visible leaks of any kind.
