How Often a Residential Generator Should Be Serviced

You rely on your standby home generator to kick on and be there when your power is not. While it is not in use often, it plays a vital role in your daily life and can impact it positively or – if it does not work properly – negatively. That is why it is very important to take care of your generator and its components, so that it can take care of you and your family whenever it is needed.

A Question of Usage and More

One factor in how often your standby home generator would be inspected and looked at is how often you are using it. If in the last six months, you have had issues with your power and your generator has had to run, then you need to have it analyzed for any maintenance or needed repairs. Typically, if you hit 400 hours of use, your unit and the system should be inspected to see if it has hit any snags or developed any problems. Regular use of your generator calls for maintenance every six months. If your generator was working about 3 to 4 hours a day, it can hit 400 hours in about four months’ time.

If you do not need to implement your generator often as your power has not gone off, then you may think that you can go an extensive period of time between professional visits. But you need to remember that a unit that runs often and is maintained will more than likely last longer than a unit that is not used for years but is also neglected and left to sit quietly on its own. There are just many things that can occur with various components or a potential for dangerous conditions if you do not keep an eye on your generator.

A Customized Approach

Our Generator Technologies team can discuss with you what is best for your particular home and standby generator, depending on how often it kicks on or sits idle. Our maintenance services are conducted by a team of professionals who are licensed, bonded and insured. The team members will look at all of your components, change pieces that need to be and test your unit to make sure it will kick on when needed.

As a standby generator owner, you cannot just look to a scheduled maintenance plan as you do with your vehicles. The usage factor goes way more into play on your generator’s maintenance, and we are happy to explain if you are confused or need an expert’s opinion and guidance.

Time for Repairs or Something New?

Another benefit of having your generator regularly and consistently inspected is that we can catch any needed repairs as early as possible and take care of the issues before they become a larger problem.  We also can help you select a new standby residential generator and install it at your home. Reach out any time with questions through our online contact form.
