Winterizing Your Backup Generator

Snowy days and colder nights are when you may need your standby backup generator the most! It is vital to ensure that it is good to go during the winter season with these tips.

Keep it Clear: You do not want debris, shrubs, bushes or plants to take over the area where your generator lives on your property. Take time before any snow or ice builds up to clear the space around your generator. A 5-foot radius around your unit is a good rule of thumb so that your system’s air intake remains clear and there is no debris around that could get in your system when it kicks on.

Testing Time: If your generator has not kicked in a while, then you should take a moment to test it as instructed for your particular generator series model. Testing your generator at least once a year is important to make sure that it is in its top working order for when you really need it.

Maintenance Strategy: Even if your standby backup generator is testing fine and you have had no issues, it is a wise plan to put a strategy into place to keep it maintained. There are areas and components of your generator that may need to be tuned up. Our GenTec team members can assess your unit and make sure that everything is good to go way before you need it to kick on. Sometimes, generator components can get dirty from living outside all year long. Our team can refresh these areas and check out each and every piece.

Take Care of Repairs: If you notice any visible damage to your unit from weather elements or if it does not work properly when you test it. Do not delay addressing any repairs based on the thought process that you may not need it any time soon.
