Tips for Safely Working with Electricity

Electricity is a modern convenience, yet so much a part of our everyday lives that it’s probably not something you ever think much about. But the truth is that electricity can be dangerous. At Generator Technologies Inc., we want to make sure that you never have an electricity-related injury, which is why we have professional electricians as part of our business who can assist you with all of your home electricity needs. While we recommend that you call us for any electricity-involved projects, if you are doing a do-it-yourself job at home, here are some key safety tips when working with electricity–

Turn Electricity Off If You’re Doing Any Repairs

Want to take a look at the wiring for your living room lights? Need to do some maintenance on your stove? Thinking about replacing your outlets with ones that look more modern? If you will be working with anything that relies on an electrical current, turn of the electricity to that outlet/appliance/light before beginning work! Don’t be fooled by the “it’s not on” mentality – on or not, electricity is flowing and you are risking electrocution.

Avoid Water

This is a pretty obvious one, butting keeping outlets, appliances, or anything else that uses electricity near water is asking for an accident. Water is highly conductive, and electricity can travel fast! If you have a spill of water in an area where electricity is flowing, heed the tip above and turn off the power.

Know What Your Outlets Can Handle

Home renovation project or not, a general safety tip for electricity in the home is to never overload your outlets. Each outlet in your home is designed to deliver a specific amount of electricity – if you overload your outlets, you run the risk of a small explosion or fire.

Notice Dangerous Cords and Wires

Cords and wires that transmit electricity should always be covered with a protective coating. If you notice that wires or cords are frayed or that the coating is stripped, but sure to cover the area with electrical tape (after making sure that the appliance is unplugged or the electricity is off). However, while electrical tape can be handy when short on time, the best thing that you can do is to totally replace the faulty wire/cord.

Use Gloves and Goggles

If you are working on any type of electrical circuit in your home–which you really should not do unless you have proper training–be sure to always wear quality insulated rubber gloves and goggles to protect yourself.
