Proper Generator Safety Measures

With extreme weather events increasing in severity and frequency, it seems as though power outages are becoming more and more common nationwide. While having a standby generator on one’s property can be a great way to ensure that the lights stay on when all goes dark, proper generator safety measures are key. Consider some of these dangers of standby generators when not used properly, tips for staying safe, and how to learn more about generator installation and safety in Illinois and Indiana–

What Are the Risks of Generator Use?

The benefits of using a generator far outweigh the risks, especially because risks can be avoided with proper generator safety measures. With that in mind, one risk of using a generator is the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Another risk is the risk of electrocution, as well as the risk of fire in some cases.

Proper Generator Safety Measures When Using a Generator

The good news is that while generators can be risky–and things like carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution can be incredibly dangerous, even fatal–harm from a generator is usually 100 percent preventable. Here are some generator safety measures to keep in mind:

  • Always ensure that a generator is installed by a qualified technician or/and electrician. If you do not have professional experience working with a generator, do not attempt to install a standby generator on your own.
  • Never, ever run a generator inside or in a garage. Running a generator safely requires plenty of ventilation to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide gas, which has no smell and can be deadly.
  • Be sure that your home’s carbon monoxide detectors are installed and have working batteries. The same is true for your smoke alarms.
  • Don’t touch a generator with wet hands, as this could increase your risk of electrocution.
  • Never let children or pets play near a generator.
  • If your generator isn’t functioning properly, call a professional for service. It’s often unwise to attempt repairs by yourself, and leaving repairs unattended could result in bigger complications later on.
