Signs You Need Professional Electrical Work in Your Home or Business

Do your lights keep going out, even though you’ve changed the bulbs multiple times? Do you notice loose electrical wires poking out? If so, these are signs that you have an electrical problem, and likely require the assistance of a professional electrician. Electricity can be dangerous, and electrical repairs are never something that you should try to perform on your own. At Generator Technologies Inc., our skilled electricians can provide you with the electrical services you need. We serve both home and business owners in Illinois and Indiana.

When to Call a Professional Electrician

You should never attempt to correct a problem involving electricity yourself unless you are a trained electrician. If you do attempt to perform electrical repairs, make sure that the electricity is turned off. For most jobs, though, you’ll want a professional. Here are some situations when reaching out to a professional electrician is warranted–

  • You’re hearing crackling or buzzing sounds. Does your light switch make a crackling sound when you turn it on? Or are you hearing a buzzing in the walls? If so, this is likely an indication that there has been a breakdown in components and that your light switch needs to be replaced.
  • Your light bulbs keep burning out. Do you feel as though you’ve replaced a lot of light bulbs lately? If so, it may not be a problem with the bulbs – there might be something going on with the electricity. For example, the voltage might be too high, the bulbs might be improperly connected, or the wiring may be loose.
  • Your electrical outlet is smoking. If you notice smoke coming out of an outlet in your home, this is an emergency. First, unplug any devices that are connected to the outlet. Then, if the smoke is coming from within the wall and not the device that you just unplugged, evacuate the house and call the fire department.
  • Your circuit breaker trips often. Do you often lose electricity to a section of your home or business as a result of a tripped circuit breaker? If so, you may need repairs or an updated system.
