What Is the Perfect Location for a Home Generator?

If you’ve decided to purchase a home generator, congratulations! You’re taking the first steps towards emergency preparedness and improved comfort and wellbeing in the event of a blackout. But before you dive head-first into the installation phase of things, it’s important to decide where on your property your generator will sit. Rather than just picking any random location, it’s important to be strategic about your choice. Here are some things to think about when siting a standby generator—

Things to Consider

As you choose the perfect location for your standby generator for home or business, think about the following:

  • Power source. It may seem obvious, but you’ll be surprised how many times a property owner thinks they’ve picked out the perfect spot for a generator only to realize that there’s not a nearby power source. You’ll need to put your generator as close to a power source as possible and ensure that it can actually be connected to your home or business.
  • Aesthetics/design. Of course, you don’t want your generator to be an eyesore. Luckily, this can usually be avoided with strategic generator placement. What’s more, generators of today are much smaller (and quieter!) than they used to be, and are less of a nuisance as such.
  • Local codes and requirements. Depending on where you live, your local authority may have requirements for generator siting, particularly as the siting pertains to the power supply.  There may also be requirements related to distance from windows and doors, distance from flammable materials, and placement on a flat surface of gravel or concrete.
  • Safety. When installing a standby generator, safety is the most important consideration. If you have children or pets, making sure that the generator is cordoned off is critical.
  • Noise. While there are many quieter models of generators on the market today, generators do still produce some noise when running. This may be a nuisance for you, but also for your neighbors. As a general courtesy, you may consider placing the generator as far away as possible from neighbors’ homes.
