Common Questions We Hear About Home Electricity

As a homeowner in Illinois or Indiana, electricity plays a huge role in your comfort, even if it’s not something you think about regularly. As such, you may have questions about your home’s electricity system, how to troubleshoot various problems, and who you can call if you need electrical services. At Generator Technologies Inc., we have trusted electricians that can answer your questions. Here are some common questions we hear about home electricity – for fixes and repairs, call our electrician directly today.

Why Are My Lights Flickering?

Flickering lights are usually an indication of an electrical problem. If only one light is flickering, you may be able to chalk it up to the bulb; if multiple lights are flickering, you have a circuit issue. Sometimes, the issue is caused by a single large appliance (like a dishwasher) adding a significant load to your home’s electrical circuit breaker; other times, it could be the result of electrical service issues, such as loose conductors. It’s smart to have the problem looked at by a professional.

What Is a Short Circuit?

You’ve probably heard the term “short circuit” before, but do you know what it means? Another way to think of a short circuit is a shortcut – that’s because short-circuiting happens when electricity flows in a route that wasn’t previously established, taking the path of least resistance. When this happens, that route can become overloaded, causing the circuit to “short” and resulting in appliances not working. The cause of short circuits could be loose wire connections, faulty appliance wiring, or poor wire insulation.

How Do I Know When to Replace My Electrical Panel?

Did you understand that your home’s electrical panel is something that you’ll need to replace at some point? Just like appliances within your home, the electrical panel can wear out. Signs that it may be time to replace your electrical panel include flickering lights in your home, burn marks on the electrical panel or a burning smell, an electrical panel that regularly trips, and age – if your home’s electrical panel is particularly dated, it may be time to replace it. Our electrician can assess your electrical panel and provide a recommendation.

My Light Bulbs Burn Out Quickly – What Does This Mean?

If your light bulbs are burning out quickly, it may not just be your light bulbs that are to blame – it could be an electrical issue. Common causes could be bad wiring, poor insulation, a bad connection, incompatible wattage (you can’t just put any light bulb in!), or something else.
