Summer Storm Preparedness Tips

If you live in Indiana or Illinois, summer storms are something you’re all too familiar with. While summer storms can be enchanting and beautiful, some storms in the midwest can be severe. Lightning, high winds, and hail are all very possible. Sometimes, summer storms can result in power outages and, in the worst of cases, lead to a declared state of emergency. Here are some summer storm preparedness tips to ensure that you and your family are ready for anything–

Pack an Emergency Survival Kit

At all times of the year–storm season or otherwise–having an emergency preparedness kit on hand is important. Your emergency kit should have, at the bare minimum:

  • Non-perishable food items and water–enough to last for at least a few days per person.
  • A first-aid kit–You can check out the website of the Red Cross for information about what to include.
  • A flashlight and extra batteries.
  • Blankets and clothing to get you through any weather, including hats.
  • Prescription medications that you or your family members depend on.

Keep in Touch

Another way to be prepared for a storm is to maintain communications during the storm. This can be hard to do, as electricity outages may mean a lack of access to TVs and radio. Try to stay in touch with friends, family, or neighbors through cellphones or by physically checking in if doing so is safe. It’s also important that your family within your home knows what to do in the event of an emergency. It’s smart to assign a designated meeting spot and make sure everyone knows where to go.

Considering Installing a Residential Standby Generator

One way to keep the lights on when things go dark everywhere else is to invest in a home standby generator system. With a standby generator, you can keep powering your house and your essential appliances. You can choose a generator that works for your power needs. There are multiple sizes of generators available.
