Five Golden Rules of Electrical Safety

Working around electricity can be incredibly dangerous and is always a job that’s best left to a professional. At Generator Technologies Inc., we want you and our electrical contractors to be safe. Consider these five golden rules of electrical safety, and always call a professional electrician.

1. Always Disconnect

The first rule of electrical safety is to always disconnect whatever you’re working on. This might mean unplugging an appliance that requires repairs or turning off a circuit breaker. You must disconnect before performing any electrical work to reduce the risk of electrocution.

2. Ensure There’s No Chance for Reconnection

The second rule of electrical safety is to disconnect any possible feedback. Essentially, this means that devices should be secured against any possible reconnection–such as someone walking in and flipping the circuit breaker back on while you’re working on an appliance or wiring.

3. Check That There’s No Voltage

A professional electrician will have access to a voltmeter, which is used to assess whether or not there is any presence of electrical voltage. Even if you are disconnected and have ensured that there’s no chance for reconnection, you need to check that there’s no voltage just to make sure!

4. Ground the Installation

Again, this is a job for a professional electrician. Even if you’ve taken all of the steps above, it is critical that you short-circuit the installation and ground it so that in the event that current does start flowing, the discharge won’t reach you/another person.

5. Cordon Off the Area

Finally, because electricity can be dangerous and taking more precautions than fewer is always advised, be sure to cordon off the area and use signage to direct people away from it. This is true regardless of whether you’re on a commercial site or in your own home. If there is a risk, be sure that people steer clear of it.

Always Hire a Professional Electrician

It is always in your best interests to hire a professional electrician. Even if you have a small replacement or repair job at home, if electricity is involved, don’t do it yourself! Electrocution injuries can lead to permanent injury or death.

At Generator Technologies Inc., our electrical contractors have experience in commercial and residential electrical projects. No job is too big or too small for our team.
